This took me over a month to create. The pictures are from family, friends and many, many wonderful people who donated their photos via Flickr. I tried collecting as many diverse voices as I could to make everyone feel included. These voices include my mailman, the wonderful crossing guard at the bottom of our street, a surfer I met at the beach and even the dad of football star Donovan McNabb!
As for the music, it was created by a wonderful pianist in Hawaii named Karen Marie Garrett. She had described the song as a meditation on her own father who had recently passed away. Karen didn’t even know about the intro I was making when she submitted the song. I listened to it and thought, “Gee, maybe this will work with it,” and just stuck it into the sequence. By the end of watching the music playing under the voices, I was surprised to find myself in tears. This had never happened to me before with something I had made. For me, it was just such a perfect marriage of picture and music. I’m still amazed by it.
The idea of this intro is to set the tone for the rest of the film, to get people to be reflective, contemplative and open. I hope it works for you and look forward to sharing the rest of the film when it is released to DVD on May 18th!
